International Certificate of Competency Any of you considering sailing abroad or hiring a yacht abroad should consider acquiring an internationally recognised qualification. At present, this is not a prerequisite everywhere. However as we become more regulated, it may become a requirement in the not so distant future. There are various levels of competency that may be achieved from Competent Crew to Yachtmaster Offshore. These courses are probably well known to you. They are run under the auspices of the ISA in Ireland and equate to similar courses designed by the RYA in the U.K. However, excellent as these qualifications are, their Certifications do not have wide international recognition. Therefore if you are considering doing one of these courses, you should consider doing an assessment to qualify for an International Certificate of Competency also. On successful completion of this assessment, the ISA will award the relevant Certificate in the form of a Credit Card-like document. The certification is a European Union initiative. The EU has appointed administrators in the various countries. In Ireland the ISA were appointed to administer the scheme. The ISA in turn appointed several examining centres to both supply tuition and perform assessments. Therefore, if you would like to achieve this certification you can either attend at one of the centres for tuition and assessment or for assessment only. The ISA have a list of centres where this certification can be gained and you can contact the ISA to get a list of those centres convenient to you. I, personally completed my assessment and gained my ICC with the Kilrush Creek Adventure Centre. I found them excellent and would recommend them. They can be contacted on 065-9052855 or 086-2743737 (ask for Paul). I'm sure they would be happy to supply you with additional information regarding their scheduled dates for assessment which run throughout the year.
